Default Updating a Child Template ?? - 07-12-2004 , 03:15 PM

How do I update a child template? I made some changes to the parent, then
updated. In Files I noticed that only the pages that were based on that
parent were updated, not the child template or the pages that were based on
the child template.

Thanks for any help,
Tony

Tony:

Here are five ways to make changes not propagate from Template to child -

1. Rename the Templates folder
2. Move the Templates folder to some other folder level in the site other
than root level
3. Move a template out of the Templates folder.
4. Make changes to an editable region of the template (which will not
propagate)
5. Corrupt the site cache so that the link between template and child page
is broken

The latter problem can be repaired by using SITE | Advanced > Recreate Site
Cache, and the three others can be fixed by just not doing them. Have you
done any of those?

These are true whether the child page is a template or just an instance
page....

#4 was most likely the culprit. Can I reverse it in any way?

My site is running great. I'm just at the nit picky stage and for the heck
of it I tried to make a change to my MM1 when I noticed the problem with 13
of my 38 pages. Those 13 were based on the child (nested template?) The
other pages are fine.

Can I dump the child template and attach the original (parent) to those
pages? Will this unlock those regions that I could not get in to? Or another
work-around.

Worse case scenario, I copy the content from each of those 13 pages and
paste that info into new pages based on the original template.

Ooooo and who's that feller that made "13" so unlucky??? Dagnabbit.

Tony

8).

Why are you using nested templates anyhow?

Can you show me the code on each template's page?

Oh you just had to ask. Kinda reminds me of a time when I was 12 and I
couldn't open the basement door from the outside. So I when inside the
house, from the front door, trotted down to the basement, grabbed a broom
stick handle, went back outside a smashed the glass on that old door,
reached inside and opened the door. Dad came running down too see what all
the ruckus was and he asked, "why'd you do that?" My reply, "seemed like a
good idea at the time".... I spent the rest of the summer cutting the grass
and pulling weeds to pay for my stupidity.

Sent attachments of the templates to your email. Too big to attach here.

Thanks

All fixed. I just remade those 13 pages from the parent. It was a matter of
copying and pasting. Then when I was done I deleted that extra child
template that I had. Now they're all based on the same template and I can
make the changes without a hitch.

Great - nested templates are useful, but complicate things substantially!
