Default Transfering domain names - what a pain - GoDaddy?? - 06-28-2004 , 01:40 PM

I'm faced the headache of attempting to transfer several domain names. My
employer has several clients and several domain names. Of course, they were
all registered by different people at different times with different
services. And most of the email addresses listed for these domains (but not
all) are no longer valid.

What I'd like to do (dreaming....) get control of these domains again and
add myself to all of these domains as the Technical Contact so that I can
make payments and change technical stuff like Name Servers if ever needed.
A few domains will be expiring in a few months which I'm getting nervous
about.

I'm not looking forward to wrestling with Register.com, Netsol.com and these
other less than top-notch domain name services in order to get control.
I've already been trying over the past couple of days and I'm getting no
where FAST.

Is there anyway to get these domain names under one singe service and in my
name? I'm not so much concerned with changing the registrant and much as
just becoming a technical contact.

Has anyone ever had any luck doing this? I see that GoDaddy.com will
"transfer" domain names form $8 each but that seems way too good to be true?
How do they validate this? What would stop someone from maliciously getting
control of someone else's domain for a mere $8?

Thanks for any advice you can give!

I HIGHLY recommend www.dotster.com. I tried them because of some problems
I'd had and ended up switching every client whose domain names I handle over
there. The transfer has been absolutely smooth and painless each time. And
quick. Of course if they can't contact the domain name owner you're going to
have problems. I think it's about $8.95 for the first year if you transfer
and about $15 per year after that. And their control panel makes it simple
for me to make DNS, contact, and other changes.

No, this isn't a paid announcement, though it's starting to sound like one!

You can start the process to transfer them anywhere you want-
---BUT---
You (or someone) will have to be able to respond to whatever
confirmation/approval process the current Registrar requires before the
transfer is finalized. That will be sent to the listed Owner's email
address, in most cases.

So, suggest going through the names and starting with the process of getting
names/addresses/emails for the Owner/Registrant current and correct.
With some, if the Registrant is a company, you may have to Fax letterhead
and other proof in to make any changes if all contact info is out of date.
Several weeks. If lucky.

The Technical contact can't approve a transfer to another Registrar, afaik.
They are limited to changing DNS info at the current Registrar.
{The Registrar i'm using lists an Owner, which is who legally owns the name,
and also an Admin, who has rights to make any and all changes on behalf of
the Owner, including Transferring to a different Registrar or to a different
Owner. I list the Client as Owner, and myself as Admin}

So spend the effort on getting the Owner info correct, and someone having a
valid email listed for that. Or having a username/password if it's that kind
of system.

Also- don't wait on this.
If it gets down to within 30 days to renewal, you can't make any changes to
contact info afaik. All you can do is pay to renew where-is/as-is.

As far as I know you're right, only an owner can authorize a transfer. What
I usually do (with the client's approval, of course) is set it up so they're
listed as the owner but my email address is their contact address. That way
they're the owner of record but I can actually approve transfers. There has
to be an element of trust, I guess, but it's made life much easier in those
cases.

Actually, I'll throw my $.02 in for GoDaddy.

Any of the TLD registrars will accept a domain transfer and most are really
cheap. Anybody else remember when TLD's were $75 / year?

What keeps anyone from transferring a domain out from under you is that the
transfer must be approved by the person listed as the Administrative
Contact. That email must be valid and that person must approve the
transfer. So, unless you're already the admin contact on the account, you
will not be able to move the domain nor gain control of it.
