Default Thumbnails question - 11-11-2004 , 09:48 AM

Hi all,

I can't find any on-line help in dw or fw.

Can someone tell me if it is possible to insert an image and set it up as a
thumbnail, in either dreamweaver or fireworks?

TIA

Open fireworks, reduce the size of the image, save as 'imageThumbmail.jpg'
or whatever you want to call it.

Go to "Another useful image tool" on this page for a Thumbnail Builder:
http://www.eleanorstravels.com/photogallerysuggestions.htm
I couldn't live without it!

Quote:
Thumbnail Builder by Joseph Lowery "creates a thumbnail from a selected
image, replaces the original image with the thumbnail and then creates a
link to the larger image. Thumbnail size may be specified by the width,
height or percentage. A variety of border attributes (HTML, bevel and drop
shadow) are available).
The original image can appear in the current browser window or, if you have
E. Michael Brandt's Just So Picture Window installed, in it's own window.
The only place I know of to find this extension is in the Download section
of information about Joseph Lowery's book. It's in Chapter 7 and well worth
the trouble of acquiring it!

Some unsolicited advice: Depending on the image, a program that simply
reduces the entire image to make a thumbnail may not produce the best
results from a usability point of view, since if the thumbnail is too
small, all you get is a blurry patch that does not allow the viewer to
make a decision about whether they want to see the full-size image or
not. Consider selecting a small part of the image that contains the most
distinctive detail(s) and use that instead, reducing its size as little
as possible. That way, people will get a clearer understanding of what
information the full-size image contains.

James,

Thanks for your input.

I like the idea of cropping the larger picture to make a smaller one, but I
don' t really know which bits to show, if you pardon the expression.

The small pictures on my pages are blurred and barely identifiable. I don' t
like them.

Thanks again

Here's an example where I've used the "selective thumbnail" method:
http://www.jshook.com/autumn/

I think some of these work better than others, but this is just a page I
threw together to show some friends what autumn is like here in the
northeast US. With more care I could probably make the thumbnails more
representative of the full image.

Of course this technique won't work well if the larger image is of
something like a complex piece of machinery. A detail might not be
enough information for the viewer to make the right selection.
