Default Text size - 10-17-2005 , 11:48 AM

I've noticed that alot of websites (for eg; www.skynews.com) prevent the user from enlarging the text (in IE via View/Text Size).
Is this done via CSS?

Yes.....its good, use pixels. Unless youre a accessibilty poof and then
its bad.

Users can still enlarge the text even using pixels but its a bit harder
for then to do so.

Setting font sizes in pixels can make it a bit more difficult in IE/PC to
resize text. But it doesn't completely prevent it, and does nothing to stop
resizing in any of the other modern browsers.

You can't prevent it. Even in IE you can resize fonts, even if it's a
bit more difficult than in real browsers.

Yes, but you don't want to do it.

Let me translate Osgood's post.

It's is not possible to prevent someone from resizing the text on your page
in any modern browser. IE6 is not classed as a modern browser, but even so,
it's not possible to prevent someone that needs/knows how to resize your
text in IE6.

If you read Osgood's post at face value, you would assume that you are safe
by using pixels. You are not. Firefox, and all current Mac browsers will
allow you to resize that text.

The right answer is this - you cannot prevent it. Should you use pixels?
Sure - go ahead. Just make sure that your layout design can accommodate
expansion of your content.

That's a rather ignorant comment.

Thats pretty much exactly what I said. I don't think you need a
translator. The poster only asked about IE, not any other browser.

You might have a case for translating 'poof' its a kind of girly inuendo
directed at a bloke

Well I hope the people that know me will take it with a pinch of salt.
If anyone needs to ask about text sizing then they are not likely to
know about accessibility so no offence

I think Murray's translation was important for the OP to fully understand
what they were asking.

More often than not, the question asked isn't really the problem the OP is
trying to solve.
