Default Templates not updating children - 07-20-2004 , 01:24 PM

Hope someone can help. I have templates created by one of my students that are
not updating the pages based on the templates after they make changes. When
the pages are created, they were created indicating that they should be updated
when the template changes. When the template is changed and saved, dreamweaver
properly goes through the list of files and analyzes them but indicates 0
changed.

This problem seems to be evident on all her templates. I am about ready to
pull my hair out, I can't for the life of me figure out what is causing this.
Any ideas? The templates are in the Templates folder under the root. I tried
to attach the file, but apparently the upload utility won't take a .dwt file.
Thanks in advance

Here are five ways to make changes not propagate from Template to child -

1. Rename the Templates folder
2. Move the Templates folder to some other folder level in the site other
than root level
3. Move a template out of the Templates folder.
4. Make changes to an editable region of the template (which will not
propagate)
5. Corrupt the site cache so that the link between template and child page
is broken

The latter problem can be repaired by using SITE | Advanced > Recreate Site
Cache, and the three others can be fixed by just not doing them. Have you
done any of those?

I did not realize that changes to editable regions within the template file did
not proprogate, I suspect that is the problem, because I am pretty sure these
were all instances within the editables.

Thanks for the help.

Think about it. If you propagated changes to both editable and non-editable
regions, then all the pages on your site would look the same and none could
contain unique information.

This is the prime mantra of Templates. Only changes to non-editable regions
in the Template page will propagate.

Absolutely, I thought about it after I posted my thanks - and realized that was quite obvious why it shouldn't update. Just didn't have the thinking cap on. Again, thanks for the help.

I am also having questions about templates - I had my navbar as a library item,
then pulled that into my template. However, I was getting errors, and decided
the navbar didn't even have to be a library item - I just created it in the
template - no errors. However, I wanted to have the navbar in an editable
region, thinking I could go in on each page and change the button on the navbar
for that page - this way, people will be able to tell where they're at in the
site. However, doing this means that I can never make any other changes to the
navbar that would propagate throughout the site. Suggestions? As you can see,
I'm new at this. Getting the hang of it, but I've still got a ways to go...
