Default Templates and broken links - 07-14-2004 , 08:55 PM

I'm new. Painfully new.

I created a template from Fireworks, got it to work in Dreamweaver, then
created my first new file using the DW template. When I preview it from DW, it
looks great, but when I view it from my web server all the graphics are broken
and the stylesheets aren't working.

When I viewed the source I found that the links are all virtual, rather than
relative. Is there a way to set the link preference to relative? And does
anyone know why this is happening in the first place?

what kind of paths are they?

are they site root relative, or are they absolute paths to the files on your
hard drive?

url to the page please.

They are virtual links (e.g., "/directory/file.gif"). Go here:

HI IndigoKj,

I checked the link please copy all your images into the images folder on your
webserver. create a folder images and copy all your images inside it. and for
the button you have to create a folder called librery and copy all the images
related to library into in.

It will work..

Naaz

Those directories already exist on the server, but because Dreamweaver has
converted my file links to VIRTUAL links (instead of RELATIVE links), the web
page is trying to find the images from the root directory, not the /fralock/
directory.

As an example, the image in the middle of the page on the right hand side is
called "!dummyimage.jpg". The virtual link is pointing here:
http://www.indigowebservices.com/images/!dummyimage2.jpg, but the image is
actually here:
http://www.indigowebservices.com/fralock/images/!dummyimage2.jpg. See?

Dear Indi,

There is nothing wrong in the page i am sure. The problem is the images is
linked at src="/images/fralock_main_r7_c4.jpg" while on the browser its trying
to find it in /fralock/images

so a very simple solution is create a folder "fralock" on the root folder and
inside that folder create a folder called "images" move all your images inside
that images folder you will not face any problem i am sure.

Regards,
Naaz

Or another solution is move your first page from
http://www.indigowebservices.com/fralock/yourpage.htm to
http://www.indigowebservices.com/yourpage.htm that will be more simple if you
want

naaz

Ok, you created a DW template.

You are working in a DW defined site?
Did you save the template (dwt) to the Template folder?
Are there any other files in that Template folder (there shouldn't be).

When you are working in the template file, and you are linking your images,
pages etc., are you using "relative to document" from the dropdown in the
property inspector?
ie: in the template file, your links should look like
.../images/whatever.gif
