Default Template not really working correctly - 01-13-2004 , 09:43 PM

I thought that if I updated a template, told it to update pages that use it
and PUT it that I wouldn't have to also put all the pages that used it....
but that's exacltly what I had to do. Any thoughts? I might just as well not
have used the template!
Do you need to see the template? (DWMX 2004)

Nope, don't need to see it. Templates are DESIGN TIME only. You don't PUT
templates. They shouldn't go on your remote site at all. No need. They update
the local files and then you put all the local files. This is why templates are
only recommended for small to mid-sized web sites. I wouldn't use them on on
sites of more than about 25-45 pages. I'd use includes and/or a server-side
language.

However, it's not too much of a hassle to upload all the files after an update.
you get used to it after a while. Besides, once you've made the template and
the entire site from it, it's not like you have to update the template all that
often. Just when you add a new page or something like that. Small and
infrequent things.

Ah, thanks. Some how I didn't realize that. (Luckily CSS files work the way
I like!)
I'm Australia bound the end of March ... might have told you(?). Ballarat
for a few days to lessen the jet lag, and then off to Perth for a tour north
to Darwin for Western Australia... then to Brendon's New Zealand.

Eleanor,

That's how templates work. Make a change to the template, the
change is reflected on all the child pages of the template, but you
have to upload (put) *all* the changed pages.

If you didn't want to upload all the changed pages, then SSIs are the
way to go.

Sorry if I misread your question.

Yes, you did and the date is getting closer for you I'm sure we'll
cross paths before then, but if not, hope you have a nice stay in Oz and
have a grand time in NZ. Keep us updated with photos - I'd love to see your
Perth to Darwin ones when they are done
