Default Tables - Only want Outline Border not internal borders - 08-15-2007 , 06:51 AM

Hi

Im using MX 2004.

I'd like to add a coloured outside border to my table but when I select the
table and choose a border colour it is automatically applied to all cell
borders i.e
including the inside borders. How do I remove the internal borders or
simply set an outline border only?

This is proving to be rather cumbersome - spoilt by the ease of tables in MS
Word!

Thanks for any info.

Ian

Use CSS instead of HTML borders, e.g.,

table { border:1px solid green; }

or -

<table style="border:1px solid pink;">

You'll do yourself a big favor if you forget everything you know about
tables in Microsoft Word. This knowledge will HURT you when you are working
with HTML tables.

Hi Murray

Thanks for the advice about WORD tables! Ive already felt the pain -
assuming I could do the same in DW.

I know nothing about CSS and havent a clue how to begin using your
suggestion.

Could you or anyone suggest a good online tutorial for CSS beginners?

Thanks

Ian

I'm having a similar problem. I want to get rid of the borders around cells in
a table (including external borders). When I try CSS, I create a new style for
this document. Then I just get the dialogue box that allows me to change type,
background, box, block, border, etc.
How do I create a table style?
I've already set the border to 0 and matched background color and border color
in the property inspector. I should say that the borders show up in Opera and
FF, but not IE. Thanks.

You can do this three ways -

1. Redefine the table tag in CSS so that any table on the page will show
the desired style, e.g.,

table { border:1px solid blue; }

2. Create an id selector so that only one table on the page will show the
desired style, e.g.,

table#special { border:1px solid blue; }

....

<table id="special">

3. Create a custom class that can be used on multiple (buy not necessarily
all) tables on the page, e.g.,

table.special { border:1px solid blue; }

....

<table class="special">

Border color is invalid HTML when applied this way. But it would only show
in IE, not in Opera or FF.
