Default tables and layers - 11-01-2005 , 04:25 PM

New Dreamweaver user here.
how do i stop my text from overlapping?
I have centerd a table and added a layer with text on top of it but when i
make the browser window smaller my text goes outside the table, as the table
shrinks to the correct proportional size. Is there a way to embed this layer
into the table? or do I have to create new cells for the table and add text in
them?

If you embed a layer inside a table and set the width of the layer to a
percentage (whatever you want it to be), then it will resize along with the
table.

Whether or not you should do this will depend on what you're trying to achieve
though.

For instance this. http://www.baglanbuilders.co.uk/test1.htm
once i make the browser smaller the navigation text goes outside the table
when i would like it to stay within the table in the right hand corner.

Nonsense. Never do it - never put absolutely positioned page elements
inside a table cell. There is no reason to do so, and no guarantee it will
work even if you do.

Browse to that page. Grab the right hand border of the browser and start
making it narrower. You can see the problem is that the table moves and the
layer doesn't. That's because the layer is absolutely positioned.

Why are you doing your layout this way, anyhow. Wouldn't it make more sense
to just put those images as background images in two vertically adjacent
tables? Then you could enter text over top of them without ever using a
layer....

I would say so.

But you can't get it exactly how you want it with this combination of tables
and layers either. If you fiddle with the tables enough, you should be able
to make just about anything you want sit just about anywhere.

You did. That's what a layer is (at least as far as DW is concerned).
