Default Tables (Excel) - 01-26-2004 , 09:58 AM

I have a table in Microsoft Excel that I would like to add to my website (actually, I already have the table on the website, but I want my readers to be able to sort the table based on what they are looking for).

Here's the situation:

I created the table, it is a list of wrestlers by weight class, name, school and record.

I saved the table in Excel as a webpage. First I saved it as a webpage WITH interactivity and it worked for a moment, but then failed. As I understand it, the viewer must have Office 2000 to view the page.

After that, I just saved it as a webpage and uploaded it as is (I sorted the table and then saved it).

You can see the 2 current options here:

http://www.varsitysportsreport.com/w...g/matstats.htm

Is there a way that I can put the table on my site and let the viewer sort it without the viewer having Office 2000?

Thanks,

Steve

Steve:

Not in its current form.

If you wanted to recreate the page as a dynamic (server-scripted) page, that
pulls the data from the spreadsheet and displays it on the page, then you
could allow people to sort at will without having Excel. But you cannot do
this otherwise as far as I know.

I don't believe so. But it *is* possible to put an Excel spreadsheet there and
let people *view* it without Office. Microsoft supply a free Excel viewer that
can be freely distributed.

http://office.microsoft.com/download.../xlviewer.aspx

It does a bit more than plain viewing, but (although I haven't tried it
myself) I doubt if it supports sort.

You could consider having different sorts in different worksheets, of course.

Hi Murray:

I'll recreate the page...but, can you give me a little direction on what I need to do?

Thanks,
Steve

Interesting. That is a method I've never looked into.

But with the current state of the art, if I find data on a web page that I
want to analyse, I put it into a spreadsheet and do so there. And if I'm
providing data to be analysed by the user, I supply it as a downloadable
spreadsheet. It suffers the problem that the OP mentioned - you need Office
(or some other suitable spreadsheet package). But it doesn't actually have to
be Office 2000 - you can save a spreadsheet so that it can be accessed by
older packages.

There may be a lot to be said for using a form to tell the server what to do
and then get the resultant page back in response. That puts minimal demands on
the client system, presumably.

You could also supply a .csv (comma separated values) file. Pretty
much all spreadsheet programs can import that.

Interesting idea! Thank you.

But are there any spreadsheet packages that won't open an Excel spreadsheet
saved with backwards compatibility?

I suppose it depends on what you want to support. I guess a really old
copy of some obscure spreadsheet might not. It's probably not a
problem, but who knows.
