Default Tables don't go to top and bottom edge of page - 08-04-2004 , 06:49 PM

Hi, on my webpage, there is a green table at the top for the title and a grey
table at the bottom for the disclaimer. When I preview it in Dreamweaver these
go to the top and bottom edges of the page, but when I view it online there is
a white gap at both ends. How do I fix this?

Thanks

Josh

Josh,

Recall seeing something about this recently. I think it has to that the
borders/margins/padding or something like that needs to be set to "0". Play
around with setting the elements to zereo and you'll figure out which one it
is.

MODIFY -> PAGE PROPERTIES -> Set margins as zero. A blank setting is NOT
zero.

They are set at 0. Take a look at http://members.fortunecity.com/josh4/freewayvic/ This is just a test, so no links work.

Thanks

I have NOT been doing this very long and I could be wrong about this but....it
looks like its code thats been inserted into your page as header and footer
banners from your web host company. Im assuming that you go through Fortune
City for free web hosting? View the source and copy and paste it into
DreamWeaver in a new page and you will see what I mean. When I went in and
deleted the code for a table that was above your first table the content went
right to the top. When I deleted all of the "footer" code below your last
table your content dropped to the bottom of the page like an anchor. This is
definately not an margin issue. It's "in the code" as Nadia and Murray keep
telling me. Here I'll show you what Im seeing....

Just above the code for the first green table you're talking about is THIS
code that was inserted....

<body onUnload="var SymTmpWinOpen = window.open; window.open = SymWinOpen;
spawntopfivewindow();; window.open = SymTmpWinOpen;"
Quote:
center
<script language="Javascript"> </script>

<script language="Javascript"
src="http://www.fortunecity.com/js/adscript.global.js">
</script>

<table id=fcnavbartable style="visibility:hidden" cellpadding=0 cellspacing=0
border=0 width=730>
<tr align=center id=fcnavbartablerow>
<td>
<table cellpadding=0 cellspacing=0 border=0 width="100%">
<tr align=center>
<td width="3%"><a id="fcnavlogo" href="http://www.fortunecity.com"
target="_new"><img
src="http://www.fortunecity.com/images/fclogo_inline_new.gif" alt="web hosting,
domain name, free web site, email address" width="120" height="15"
border="0"></a></td>
<td id=fctdhosting width="22%"><a id="fcnavhosting"
href="http://www.fortunecity.com/"
style="font-family:Verdana,sans-serif;font-size:11px;font-weight:bold;"
target="_new">web hosting</a></td>
<td id=fctddomains width="24%"><a id="fcnavdomains"
href="http://www.fortunecity.com/"
style="font-family:Verdana,sans-serif;font-size:11px;font-weight:bold;"
target="_new">domain names</a></td>
<td id=fctdemail width="26%"><a id="fcnavmpa"
href="http://www.myphotoalbum.com/"
style="font-family:Verdana,sans-serif;font-size:11px;font-weight:bold;"
target="_new">photo album</a></td>
<td width="2%" id="fcnavsrchsub"><img
src="http://www.fortunecity.com/images/nb_top_right.gif" alt="" width="30"
height="15" border="0"></td></tr>
</table>

This table is inserted before your main content table. As its fortune city
stuff and has nothing to do with roads Im assuming is an advertisement header??
And is keeping your top table from starting at the top.

This code is found UNDER your bottom Grey Table that looks like it is your
intended footer....
<center>
<div id="fclinkback" style="visibility:hidden"><p>
<font face="Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif" size=1><a id="fcfootergif"
href="http://www.fortunecity.com/" target="_new"><img
src="http://www.fortunecity.com/images/fc_logo_white122x30.gif"
border=0></a><br><a id="fcfooterhosting" href="http://www.fortunecity.com/"
target="_new">web hosting</a> &bull; <a id="fcfooterdomains"
href="http://www.fortunecity.com/" target="_new">domain names</a> &bull; <a
id="fcfooterdesign" href="http://www.fortunecity.com/web-design.shtml"
target="_new">web design</a><br><a href="http://www.hotgames.com/"
target="_new">online games</a> &bull; <a
href="http://www.onlinereviewguide.com/" target="_new">digital
cameras</a><br><a href="http://www.myphotoalbum.com/" target="_new">photo
album</a> &bull; <a href="http://www.ampiramedia.com/"
target="_new">advertising online</a><br></font>
</p></div>
</center>

When it is deleted your grey table drops to the bottom.

My novice opinion is that this is advertisement added to your page by your web
hosting company in exchange for free or low cost hosting. Not really an
unreasonable request on their part.

Now someone PLEASE correct me if Im wrong. Id hate to steer someone in the
wrong direction

Without seeing the page in question, it sounds like a margin issue:

The correct way to do it:

Link to an external stylesheet (using DW's CSS editor), or embed a
stylesheet in your code (between <head> and </head>) with the following
style in it

<style type="text/css">
<!--
body { margin :0px; padding: 0px; }
-->
</style>

hahaha now Im getting cocky. lol I think I might have you on this one
Nadia....Probably not though.

He says that it looks fine in his DW program, and it doesnt look fine in mine.
So the code must be different. Im seeing tables and code that he says he isnt
seeing. Im assuming ite because code is being added to the page after he
uploads it. Hosting companies do that dont they? How else would pop up adds
be put onto pages that are on free hosting sites? If Im way off base let me
know. =-) Im seeing a new TMM by your name nowadays....does this mean Team
MacroMedia or somthing like that? Thats kind of a big deal isnt it?

Guess what - you have it!! I just went back and checked the posts. I
missed the post where the OP posted a link to the page (duh !) , I switched
OE to '"show all messages", and there's the link in a message I missed.

I viewed the link using FireFox and the pop up blocker, blocked the ads,
and all I saw was white space as described. Viewed the source code and the
margins were set correctly.

I checked the code in DW - previewed it in IE and yes, the host has banner
ads at the top and bottom - hence the white space top and bottom.

So, yes you were right :-) Means you are definitely learning !

You noticed :-) I was officially named a Team Macromedia Volunteer as of a
few days ago.
