Default table width and parenthese - 08-05-2004 , 09:47 AM

I have tables that have exact widths, but then they have another number in
parentheses. Same with cells - I have a cell that has a 1 pixel width with a
spacer image but it has a (3) next to it - when viewed it's 3 pixels wide... I
can't get it to go to 1 even though dreamweaver says it's 1 - why is this?

Because there is something in the table preventing it from getting to the
dimension you have specified.

Show me your code, please.

Here is the code for the table - the 1width column is the one in question - I
finally got it to be viewed as 1 pixel wide - but when the dimension is shown
above it in DW it still shows 1 (3), others do the same - what is the (3) for?

<tr>
<td width="10" rowspan="4" valign="top"><img
src="images/spacer.gif" width="10" height="1"></td>
<td width="1" rowspan="4" valign="top"
bgcolor="#CCCCCC"><img src="images/cccccc_1pixel.gif" width="1" height="1">
</td>
<td width="10" rowspan="4" valign="top"><img
src="images/spacer.gif" width="10" height="1"></td>
<td width="228" height="76" align="center"
valign="top"><img src="images/joints.jpg" width="200" height="75"></td>
</tr>

Actually, that's not the code for the table. Can you show me the whole
table, please?

I'm a 'tables' lady myself, but was too late - my brain was overworked from
getting to all the other table questions throughout the day

Of course. However, I think Diana got some kind of "Mistress of Pain"
award when dealing with a person who participated in the unethical
treatment of tables. ;-)

All I can add to this is that the numbers say... 40(48) or in your case 1(3)
in the table width display in design view means that DW is showing a different
width than is in the code. Basically there is a difference in the numbers of
what is being shown and what is in the code. If you right click on the top
most numbers in that tables measurement and then click on "make all widths
consistant" the widths will change to what is in the code. Thats how I
understood the pop up window that DW put up when I first started using it and
encountered that problem.

After learning the hard way I would make your changes in your code as much as
possible.
