Default Submit Button - completely confused!!! - 07-07-2004 , 04:46 PM

I created a form and added a Submit button using Insert - Form Objects - Button
and then set the action to Submit form (in the properties panel). I then used
the O'REILLY Reference in Dreamweaver and learned that no script is necessary
for the Submit object to perform it's task. So, where in the world does the
form information go to? Don't I need to supply an e-mail address or something
so it knows where the information needs to be sent? I'm sort of a newbie at
this. I previously used NetObjects Fusion and there was an add-on I bought
that automatically set up formmail script in the Submit button.

Can anybody help?

Thanks!

Dawn

The button doesn't need a script, but to process the data, you do need a
script, unless you just want the data sent via the end-user's own email
address.

The better way, though, is to process the data on the server and handle it
there. Ask your ISP if they have a forms processing script already on their
server.

You need a script to process the form DW doesn't do this automatically.

Double check with your host (isp) - check their faq page to see if they
supply you with a generic FormMail script that processes the form . Most
hosts do this as a standard part of their hosting.

Dawn,,

Download formmail and follow the instructions that come with it.
It's a snap and the NMS version already has a lot of the stuff in
it to keep spammers from using your script to send spam and to help
keep spammers from harvesting your email address. It's a whole lot
easier and much more secure than trying to write such a script from
scratch, since it contains years worth of experience.

The version available at the MSA Script Archive is very old now - the
latest version of FormMail (and the other NMS programs) is always
available at:

http://nms-cgi.sourceforge.net/scripts.shtml

Questions regardings the NMS programs are best directed to:

nms-cgi-support (AT) lists (DOT) sourceforge.net

Hope that helps.
