Default sql, sequel, database, feedback form - 03-25-2009 , 09:14 AM

Hi. In Dreamweaver 8.0 & running Win XP.

I'd like to create an .aspx page in DW of a feedback form with fields such as:
name, address, city, state, country, number, alt. number, email & comments with
also a couple yes/no questions that has a submit & clear button.

Do I need SQL or another language to set up a database? I was under the
impression you can create a database in DW. Does anyone recommend anything
better than SQL? I'd rather do everything in DW, but I've heard of others using
SQL.

Which out of the programs mentioned (Microsoft Access, Microsoft SQL Server, or
MySQL) do you feel is most popular to use while creating .aspx pages?

Are you sure it has nothing to do with databases? DW does have a Databases
window. Or is that just to connect to it?

Hi,
SQL Server is the most popular - asp.net is decided to work best with sql
server. However without knowing your budget you may not want to spend the
extra money for SQL Server if it's not included in your hosting package
already. Access is free but it's only really suitable for low volume sites -
it's also a bit easier to use.

DW has a datbase window but it just shows you the database you've already
created in Access, SQL Server etc. It won't create the db for you

Cheers,
Jon

If your coding ASP (.asp) or .NET (.aspx) the best platform is usually
MS SQL Server. But, .NET support was dropped from CS4, so if you ever
upgrade you won't be able to do anything with your existing pages. Also,
CS3 and below only supports .NET 1.1 which is way behind the current
version of 3.5. If you want to code in .NET then your using the wrong
program, look at Visual Studio or other Microsoft programs.

The database window is to setup connections to databases.

Thanks everyone.

When I do upgrade to CS4, will I still be able to use Access instead of the MS SQL Server in order to create these databases?

If you use .asp you can have Access or MS SQL in CS4, its only .aspx
that has been dropped from CS4.

Problem is CS4 doesn't support asp.net. I'd suggest 2 ways to go here
1/ If you have a VB background, or another good reason to use asp.net
Download Visual Web Developer (free) from
http://www.asp.net/downloads/essential/
This is a very good tool to develop asp.net - much better than DW. You may
or may not still want DW to handle design/layout

2/ If not
Stick with DW but go the php/mysql path. There's much more support DW wise

What are the reasons you have selected ASP.net over other scripting environments?

I did not select this, but I am open to other suggestions/options that have
been said or haven't yet.

First of all, I'd like to thank everyone for being patient with me as I am not
as knowledgeable as you all are & I can understand if this gets frustrating.

I've been told .asp is old & that .aspx is new & the way to go, but are there
big differences between the two? I don't understand why DW didn't drop .asp but
dropped .aspx.

I do not have a VB background. I have never made a form with function, only a
layout of one. So, if I create a PHP form, I can use either SQL Server or
Access?
