[Q]Another interesting note, I found the .png-24 in Photoshop CS4 gave the best
results. But, I'm concerned about "provide greater cross-browser compatibility"
as you have pointed out. So, that is why I started playing around with image
formats.[/Q]

As I do not have CS4 it is difficult for me to help you further. Simply
understand that between GIF and JPEG (JPG) files only GIF files will produce a
transparent background. In contrast, JPEG (JPG) files will always produce an
opaque background that you may turn down through opacity adjustments, but will
never eliminate completely without eliminating the entire image.

Thus, if you continue down the same path, whatever font style and effect you
select in Photoshop, it must convert well from PS to GIF format.

If you are unable to achieve the effect that you desire in GIF format, then you
might try the following:

Abandon the current path that you are on, and return to your previous path.
Rather than using the color white, however, use your color selector to choose a
color from your background image. The color that you choose should be bright
enough to stand out, but not so bright that it detracts from the key elements
of your background image.

Similarly, the copyright information should be moved to a corner of your
window in much the same way that an artist signs a painting. The color that
you choose could be selected in a way similar to that with which you choose the
color of your menu bar.
