Special Characters: Force Numeric?

I know that the code for a bullet "•" doesn't register with sometimes in
the browser, and the code appears on the page. I can change it to "&#8226" and
avoid the problem. Isn't there some way to make Dreamweaver default to the
numeric codes instead of the abbreviations?
