Default snapping layers - 07-31-2004 , 04:26 PM

Can I snap a layer to a cell rather than to an image? If so how. If not, why not?

THanks

Ask PVII.

Why do you want to do this?

Hi again,
you can if you give the <td> an id, then you'll see the cell id in the snap
layer dialogue box.
not sure if it works for all browsers but seems to in IE6 on PC.

What good is it if it doesn't work on others, then?

Murray,

I said I wasn't sure. If you know it won't, it might be helpful to say so,
perhaps pointing out which ones and why so we all may learn :-)tks.

Really, I don't know for sure. But I do know this - a method that doesn't
work on the major browsers is not a useful one, for me at least.

Since I learned how to do this with CSS, I don't use SnapLayers much
anymore. Such a thing would be pretty straightforward to do with CSS....

hmmm...straight forward for womeone who knows how to do something like that.
I want to snap one layer to another layer because I want a drop down menu (the
anchor layer) to have a sub menu (the snapped layer). As I have the main menu
layer snapped to the image that triggers it to appear it is going to move with
the image. Because I want it to have a submenu I want the submenu to move with
it. I suppose I could snap them both to the same image so they will move the
same distance, but it just seems to make more sense to snap to the layer
itself. It sounds like you think this is a bad idea. Any reasoning? Im all
ears.

Thanks

woops wrong response...(above) That was for snapping a layer to a layer.... I
want to snap a layer to a cell because I don't really want to put an image in
the cell. I can put a transparent gif spacer type image, but that still takes
up room and throws off the padding etc. AND/OR I would like to center the
layer on an expanding cell that has an image that is aligned left. The layer
stayes centered while the image remains left. Make sense?

It's much easier to do this with CSS.

Here is a good demonstration -

http://www.roast-horse.com/tutorials/_tutorials/css_centered_content/index.html

And here is some code -

(inline styles used for clarity)

STYLESHEET -
body { text-align:center; } /* for IE5/IE5.5 */
#wrapper { text-align:left; }

BODY -
<div id="wrapper" style="width:760px; top:0; margin:0 auto;
position:relative;">
<div id="layer1" style="width:200px; top: 25px; left:140px;
position:absolute;">blah</div>
<div id="layer2" style="width:180px; top: 136px; left:23px;
position:absolute;">blah</div>
</div>

Try that - an outer relatively positioned division with a width and auto
left and right margins. All interior AP divisions will be centered, yet
retain the
same relative positioning.
