Default slight difference in bkgrnd color - 08-04-2004 , 01:50 PM

I saved my photoshop originals as .png(liked how everything looked) and added
content in fireworks. Out of fireworks I saved some of the slices as jpeg's and
some as gifs. There is a slight difference in the background color between some
of the slices. How do I fix this?
Thanks,
-Bill

Use GIFs only. You will never be able to match colors between GIF and JPG
because of the lossy compression in a JPG image.

"Never" is an exaggeration.
But it might be tricky occasionally, and you'll need some luck.

Mathemetically speaking, probably not. JPGs average data and introduce
randomness to a file to compress it. The very nature of JPG shifts the
colors in an image.

You could get incredibly close...probably indiscernable to the eye/monitor,
but they'd probably still be slightly out of wack if you look at the bits
and bytes ;o)

It is often enough to make it the default, however....

Bingo. My point exactly. Darrel also had a clear insight as well....

OK, then you would have to adjust the background of the GIF/PNG to the
background of the compressed JPEG. And you would have to re-adjust it
after every change to the JPEG ...

No, I have done this several times in PS.
I used a palette much larger than the actual image required and filled a
bottom layer (PS lingo) with correct hex color and added the image I
intended to use in a layer on top of that. Then flattened ad saved as
jpg and finally cropped the image pretty much but still a fair bit from
the actual motive. When enlarging the image to check the pixels (or
using the Digital Color Meter in the Mac's utility folder), I found a
few pixels with slightly off colors here and there - which I easily
changed. However, I admit I had to test several times occasionally.
Bottom line: It's a myth that it's impossible or even close to
impossible. But using gif instead will save a lot of work...
