The company I work for, and myself personally are abandoning 800x600. Our stats
show about 4% of users that are under 1024x768. I'd say we have a pretty good
cross section of industries and individuals visiting our homepage too.

Perhaps Osgood can point us to these "facts" he's quoting - I'd wager they
must be a touch out of date ;-)

Not necessarily. It all depends on your site's demographic. I still have
a site that's getting about 18% at 800x600, with still the occasional
640x480 user. I have another site where the 800x600 crowd is down to
1.4%, but I'm seeing increasing numbers of tiny screens as the use of
cell phones and PDA's increases.

Last month I had 116 different screen resolutions detected on my
personal site. Screen resolutions ranged in from 3840x1024 down to
176x220. Both ends of the spectrum seem to be increasing while the
numbers in the middle are decreasing as more and more people use higher
resolution monitors or dual monitors and also smaller devices like the
aforementioned cell phones and PDA's. In addition, many of the wider
screens are really dual monitors. I doubt you'd want your site split
between two monitors. ;-)

And do those stats apply to me, and my demographic?

No to both my question and Malcolm's.

Yes but can that stats tell whether the users have their browser
maximised - or at only a percentage of the screen area ???

No, they can't, but resolution is still relevant and useful information in
gauging the possible/likely window sizes being used.

No, but I sometimes wonder if people are looking at their stats. The times
they are a-changin'. :-D

You should still design for 800x600 resolution. Even though its not very
popular, its still in use.

The majority of people are able bodied, that doesn't mean we should do away
with disabled amenities ie toilets, ramp access, wheechair lifts etc.

Thats my way of looking at it anyway! :-)

Ok, but by that reasoning, you should still design for 640 x 480, too. It's
still in use somewhere or other, I'm sure. :-)

I don't think you can compare it with providing access for the handicapped
to toilets and stairways, because people on lower-resolution monitors can
easily scroll and use a "bigger" web page, with only slight inconvenience.

Everybody has to figure this out for himself, but as for me, I don't like
making the 97% of my users with higher resolution monitors look at an
odd-looking narrow little page, in order to make sure 3% don't have to move
their finger on the mouse to scroll horizontally a little.

As for people stuck with lower-resolution settings who don't maximize the
browser, they can damn well maximize it.. :-D in my humble opinion.

Hey engmix....

I have two 22" wide panel monitors and when I went to your site I had to use
my scroll bar to see what was at the right end of the screen. And that was with
my favorites window almost closed. You migh want to consider sizing down a
little. As one member here stated.... Not everyone has 50" monitors.

M.
