Default site review - 03-12-2005 , 08:30 AM

I would like comments and suggestions on my site. I still have to put up my
animations and artwork, but that can't be done for a couple of weeks. But the
site is done enough for people to get a feel of the site. I am very open
minded to any suggestion. One thing I would really like suggestions on is how
to say what page is open. Right now I have it on top left of the main window.
I am not sure how professional that looks. here is the link

It's not bad. I think it's a little confusing that you don't have anything
next to those images to tell people that they're links. of course once you
move your mouse over them, then they realize they're links. i know you're
shooting for an artsy-jazzy look by doing that, but sometimes it's better to
keep it simple. that's not to say you can't design something that will
showcase your abilities, but make it easier to navigate through. also, i don't
like the way you have a right-click and it brings up your personal info. that
may seem like a good way to prevent people from downloading your images, but
why worry about that now? if you were an artist that's slowly making money in
the field, then worry about it then. one more thing - i would suggest you not
use layers [or div containers] to put stuff in. please look at your site with
the mozilla firefox browser and you'll notice some of your words at the top are
messed up. you can get the FF browser free at mozilla.org good luck.

Hi

I think you need to understand a few basics, when you design a site you
should always design for the target audience and whatever that audience is
you need to keep things simple. One of the most important aspects of any
good website is the navigation. So lets say that you are going to design a
site that sells books, the target audience would probably be familiar with
Amazon. So you would approach a nav layout similar to Amazons. Why? Well you
are helping yourself and the end users, they will come to your site and will
be able to navigate with ease because they are accustomed to this type of
navigation. I'm not saying you should copy or anything, I am saying you
should have something similar.

I went to your site and I was a bit lost, I didn't know what was meant to
happen to be honest, I'm a decent surfer and I can usually work around silly
nav tricks but you must believe me when I say that many people don't get
these things and they end up by either going back to Google or just pressing
the back button. I have seen so many issues where people are baffled by
things like dropdown menus and such.

You will benefit if you read up on html and css, if I were you I would drop
this project and read through some tutorials. Practice some stuff and create
something simple that works. I hope you don't take this as a personal attack
or anything, it's not, it's good advice. We have all been in the situation
that you are in, my first site was probably the worst the web has ever seen,
I listened to what people had to say and I read tutorials and got invaluable
info from a number of sites, I still do this and I would imagine everyone
else here does the same.

Why you are using layers? I presume it is because you open DW and you can
slap these things onto a pge and bingo, well it don't work like that.

I see you want to work for Dreamworks, well then, create a stunning simple
website with decent code and you will have something to be proud of. I wish
you all the best with this project.

this site was very interesting to make, because I do not know much about
webdesign. And to make it navigatable it was either layers or frames. The
layers are small and it does not take long to load. Thanks for pointing that
out about mozilla. I made the whole site a table and put my layout inside of
the table so I can have control on keeping layers the same position to the view
window. So it is very odd that mozilla is showing the site different. What
can you suggest. I also want suggestion on how to show that the tabs are
links? I thought about how I could do that but I couldn't think of anything
nice.

keep in mind this is not a professional site. I am not soliciting for jobs. I have the site because animator needs site for people to go to and see their work.

I need an opinion on where the title of my site should go. Right now I have it in the top right corner. It may look better being bottom left. Any suggestions on where it should go.

Hi

You have no idea what you are doing, that is why you are asking questions,
this is a good thing as you will get answers. You have had a couple of very
good answers already, people here don't get paid for typing these answers
out, it's free. Listen to what people here have said to you and tackle the
issues and then move forward.

Yes, you need to dump the whole project. I'm sorry if this offends you but
you will be grateful to me later on :!)

Read some stuff, start learning html and css and other stuff.

well to answer to pablo. This thread was for site review not questions. You
had some very good comments and I understand them completely. I liked you
suggestions, but I didn't know how to do them. I also explained why I used
layers. It is like some web designer taboo. As I understand it is only bad to
use layers if it takes a long time to load. My site doesn't. And yes I do not
know what I am doing, so I do not know the proper way of making things pop-up
in the table without using layers or frames. Frames are an even bigger taboo
from what I hear. And the only thing I asked about was where people thought my
title should go and what was a smart way to make the tabs obvious links, that
is just getting public opinion on look, not on how to edit html code. I stand
corrected I asked on how to help with the mozilla problem, but I hardly think
my site needs to be scratched. Some webdesigner can be great at getting html
fluent sites, but the sites have no life, they are very cut and dry. I tried
to make mine plain but beautiful. I personally like the layout. I am an
artist so I would like to make my site to be eyecandy, I admit. And I did not
take offence to your comments. I am merely explaining to you the situation.
And I appreciate your comments. They were very good. And I hope you take no
offense to my comments.
