Default Site Definition/Connecting to Remote Server - 12-24-2003 , 05:39 PM

Hello,

I have just recently started using Dreamweaver MX 2004 and this is my first post. I hop someone can help me with the problem I am having.

While defining a site I attempted to enter the remote server connection as FTP, but when I test the connection the status box "indicates the server is not responding" and finally times out with an error message indicating that a connection to the host could not be made.

I have gone through the Macromedia tech notes and tried a few things without success. I have also confirmed the FTP address with my hosting company. Finally I was able to connect to the host server via FTP in IE using the same FTP address I entered in the Site Definition box of Dreamweaver, so I know the address is good.

Can anyone please help me?

Thanks,

Gary

Make sure the following items are checked on your definition page:
"Passive FTP" and
"Use Firewall" (verbiage may vary, I'm using MX)

This has helped me in the past, good luck

Please tell me how you have defined your remote site - what values are in
each field?

Murray,

Here is what I have entered,

How doyou connect to your remote server? FTP

What is the hostname or FTP address of the webserver? FTP.wwvc.net

What folder on the server do you want to store your files in? 'left this blank' (webhosting company told me this could be left blank, but I have also tried it with a folder name)

What is your FTP login? 'my login'

What is your FTP password? 'my password'

Then I check the 'UseSecure FTP box'.

What do you think?

Thanks,

Gary

Try this:

Un-check the Use Secure FTP box and check the Use Passive FTP box.

Thanks for the suggestion. When I test the connection now, it works. Does this mean I can't use a secure transfer or how do I do it?

Thanks,

Gary

You're welcome. What it means is that the server is apparently not set up
for secure FTP. You'll need to check with the host to see if it's available.
