Default Server Side Includes - 08-18-2006 , 02:19 PM

I've been running a website for a small eating disorders charity. It's grown to
over 100 pages and I'm getting sick of Dreamweaver MX's painfully slow (and
nigh on 100% CPU usage) grind through the site as it updates library items.

Server Side Includes make a lot of sense but I believe that I'll need to
rename my file extensions from .htm to .shtml or similar. The thing is, the
website has been up for some years and we have a lot of incoming links, not
only to or domain iteself but to specific pages such as index.htm and others.

If, for example, I rename contact.htm to contact.shtml and a browser requests
contact.htm will the webserver know to pass back contact.shtml or will it
generate a page not found error?

Just wondering whether changing to SSI with cause problems.

See if the webhost (or via a control panel) can change it so that .htm files
get interpreted for SSI instructions. I was able to do that with my web site
and never had to rename the files, but could use SSI commands.

Thanks Zippy,

that sounds ideal. I've had a little play and currently .htm files aren't able
to include SSIs, it looks like I'd need to rename the files to .shtml. I've
got in touch with the hosts but haven't heard back yet.

We're on a Linux server and I've looked through the options on CPanelX but
can't see anything that looks a likely candidate, do you remember how you
turned on SSI interpretation from standard files?
