Default search for phantom character - 03-01-2004 , 10:15 AM

Can some one please help me search for the < appearing at the top lefthand
corner of this page: http://www.xs4all.nl/~hogen/TaalVlinder/codes_Dal.htm
?

It is obviously outside the table, but I cannot for the life of me where it
is living in the code.

I did a search for <(space) and for &lt; , without results.
Am I going blind?

Your help will not only be appreciated, it will probably save me from going
mad...

You have done it again, Murray.
Thank you very much.
I now realize I was wrong to search for < followed by a space.
But how come it shows outside of the table?

In my experience (which, alas, is vast) stray characters are just thrown
up on the page *somewhere.* Of course this makes them hard to find since
where you see them on the page may be far from where they occur in the
source.

yes- it's usually characters that are in "no man's land" in a place that
doesn't allow them. Such as between <TR> and <TD>
they will just be tossed on the screen.

a search that might narrow it down is to search for that character and a
left or right bracket-

<< or if it's a letter g, g<

Alan and James:
nevertheless I learnt a lot from this.
Next time I'll try even more searches before I post.
Still: thanks very much for responding.

The easy solution is to not put such characters on your page in the first
place! 8)

Agreed!
What is your alternative for <td></td> ?

Seriously: I was going crackers, especially since I made the basic mistake
of not realizing that the < shown 'above' the table by my browsers , did
not actually have to be situated there at all.

You taught me that, M!
That should be one mistake less in future... (but I, as opposed to some of
you guys, am merely human ;-))
