Default Search Engine Optimization - 09-22-2005 , 02:47 PM

My web site is on the internet, and obviously i want people to see it. I have
put in all the meta tags, keywords, and descriptions. I have even started
submitting it to the big search engines. I have got to some however and they
are asking me if my site is robot friendly, or spider or crawler. They suggest
that i have a folder like robot.txt in my root folder. Is this something I
need to do to get into search engines, or will they find me without this folder?

hi,
robot.txt is a file which guides the SE robots what to index and what not to
on ur server. You can if you want disallow a robot from indexing say image
files stored on your web server. Just search for robots.txt and u will find
lots of tutorials on them

Ok, just want to get this straight, I want all pages to be available to be
indexed so do I need a robot.txt file at all, and if i do should the text
inside the file be
User-agent: *
Disallow:

and then as i understand it to disallow it would be
User-agent:*
Disallow: /

Don't do it. Don't use spaces or punctuation (other than "_" and "-" in
file/pathnames) - it can cause problems at the server level.

bduder23,

You don't need the robots.txt file if you want everything to be indexed. Just keep submitting your site to as many search engines as you like.

But it makes sense if you want to prevent 404 errors in your logfile.
The same applies to favicons.
