Default scrolling areas within page - 07-20-2004 , 06:37 PM

Howdy,

I am looking for a solution to create a scrolling area on a page so users can
scroll content and the header and navigation bar (left) will remain stationary.
I've been told not to use frames. I've looked into Iframes but is there
something similar? Keep in mind I am pretty much novice and only familiar with
dreamweaver and not educated very deeply into html. A link to a tutorial would
be keen! Thnx for your merciful help.

Keep on Rockin'

Do yourself a favor. Just make an ordinary page with navigation that
scrolls with the rest of the page. Keep your page content short and it's
not a problem. Later, when you get better at it, you can start doing the
cheesy stuff. 8)

you could try using layers and setting the overflow property to auto (will
scroll only if has to) and applying the show/hide layer behaviour to a link.
Not sure if that will be too cheesy or how cross browser it is but worth a
crack?

The best way to get your content to scroll while still allowing search engines
to scan you is by using a "scrolling div"
Check out my explaination below:

First start with a simple DIV area and a bit of styling to make it visible...

<div style="border : solid 2px #ff0000; background : #000000; color : #ffffff;
padding : 4px; width : 200px; height : 50px; ">
1<br />
2<br />
3<br />
4<br />
5<br />
6<br />
7<br />
8<br />
9<br />
10<br />
</div>

There is a height declared, but it's doing the usual thing and expanding to
suit the contents being displayed. (Or not expanding in Netscape). Here comes
the magic...

<div style="border : solid 2px #ff0000; background : #000000; color : #ffffff;
padding : 4px; width : 200px; height : 50px; overflow : auto; ">
1<br />
2<br />
3<br />
4<br />
5<br />
6<br />
7<br />
8<br />
9<br />
10<br />
</div>

And there you have it your very own scrolling div.
