Default Scrollbars - 08-10-2008 , 07:05 PM

Hi,

Let?s face it, regular scrollbars are pretty boring, especially when one wants
to put them in a?shall we say?graphics oriented, steampunkish themed web page!

So, here is what I?m trying to do (using Dreamweaver CS3). I want to create a
brass looking, vertical scrollbar located in a specific spot (the right side)
on/in a graphic of a ?steampunk? looking LCD monitor on one of my pages. I
would like the scrollbar to control/scroll the content on the ?screen? of said
monitor graphic.

I know how to get all of the content in the ?screen? and control it with a
scrollbar, but the typical blue and gray scrollbar totally screws up the whole
ambiance of the page.

Is there any way to change it? Can this be done? Are there any examples out
there?

I'm still pretty new at this web design stuff, so any and all help would be
greatly appreciated. :O)

Thanks,

Lianna :O)

Support for this is IE only. So it's like spitting into the wind.

Perhaps to you. Apparently to those who actually use the Internet there is a
clear preference for UI components they can count on rather than be
impressed by. Form follow function, doncha know. :-)

I don't think they're boring. I want it to look like what they usually look
like so that I can find it quickly.

Having said that, just FYI, I don't have the faintest idea what "steampunk"
means. (Just lest you think that everybody knows what you're referring to!)

Cheers,

Cheers,

Style used in the movie The Golden Compass released last December:

With any luck at all, there will be 2 more movies.

Thanks Nancy. At least it?s a start. I?ll keep looking. Changing the color
may be sufficient (even if it?s only in IE), and I know that I?ve seen
scrollbars done as graphics in a few places, so it must be possible.

Bonnie your description of Steampunk is exactly correct, and I agree, I hope
that the sequels to Golden Compass are eventually made.

Patty Cake, how many people fall asleep from sheer boredom when they visit
your web site? I did! It?s got all of the appeal of a slab of concrete. Is
it true that web sites reflect their owners?

Wall-e Baby, who appointed you spokesperson for everyone who uses the
Internet? Oh right, you appointed yourself. Might I suggest that you should
stick to collecting trash and making it into nice little cubes.

Well, at least it?s good to know that Plain Patty and Wall-e Baby are out
there, in their own offensive way, keeping the Internet safe for BORING people!
Keep up the good work!

Well, much as I love the steampunk look, I have to say Patty and Walt
are right. I have been using Firefox at home for years now, but at work
I am stuck on an intranet that still uses IE6--when I come to a site
with a colored scrollbar it's very hard for me to figure out where it
is; often the effect is similar to there being no scrollbar at all.

For the majority of your users the standard graphic user interface is
truly best; an alternative (that I personally find annoying but that
some designer/architect/artist websites use) is to create a scrolling
div that you can style the way you like.

Here is an example (even more annoyingly, it had chirping bird sounds),
though it may be that they are using Flash (didn't look at the code).

As I said, I don't recommend it because I personally hate it, but I am
probably not your demographic.

I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were only 12 and also mentally challenged.
Sure, go ahead and do whatever you want with your web site, honey. :-)
