Default scrollbar throwing out alignment - 07-11-2008 , 10:41 AM

Hi. I've got 2 frames; top for navigation and bottom for content. Both
contain a centered table and the graphics align perfectly when testing. The
bottom frame needs to scroll and the top frame needs to stay put so people can
still navigate when they are half way down the main page. Trouble is, as soon
as i make the bottom frame scrollable, it shifts the lower table to the left
(the width of the scrollbar) and the alignment is thrown out. Does anyone know
how to stop this happening?? thanks, Dren.

Welcome to frames hell. Unfortunately you have put yourself here (by
accepting the twisted reasoning that people want the navigation to be always
visible on the page). There is no way out, really. If one frame throws
scrollbars, and you try to prevent it, you may well be preventing visitors
from scrolling that page at all.

The only solution is to remove the frames and make conventional pages that
link one to the next.

Don't use frames. There are plenty of better ways to do this. Depending on
the size of your site you may want to consider making a template file. With
the template file you would add an editable region for where you want the
content and when you update the links in the menu of the template, all pages
using the template will be updated. This way the same menu is on every page
and then you don't have to worry about the alignment issues.

Also your issue is due to the scrollbars within the frame. It creates added
padding to do that which is why frames would not be recommended for such a
layout.

Better than Google, use DW's F1 help and read about it there.
