Default Saving Copy of Site - 11-06-2005 , 06:01 PM

Hi there,

I've just been given the job of updating my company's site after mentioning
that I had used Dreamweaver before. I did in fact use it a few years ago but
only very basically and this site is enormous compared with anything I have
edited before.

I am delighted to have been given this opportunity and am determined to get to
grips with it so I am here to ask for your assistance.

I opened the site in Dreamweaver no problem at all using FTP instructions.

What I would ideally like to do is have one copy of the site on my hard-drive
that I can edit as I please and then publish when I am ready, without affecting
the use of the site by others. Can you tell me how I save the entire site to my
hardrive? As it stands any changes I make to the site seem to automatically be
published and this is definitely not what I want. I like to be able to
double-check & triple-check my work before proceeding. I am using Dreamweaver
MX 2004 version 7.0

My big worry is security and as others will need access to the main site
throughout the day I must make them aware of anything I do that could affect
access. (As I am quite naive at the moment I have no idea what things could
affect access) I have also been advised to use the lock facility on the site
when I am editing pages - sounds great but I've no idea how to access it. Any
advice, tips or help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

I hope you won't object to me posting here. I just want to be a quick-learner
and I find things so much easier to learn when I ask people's advice on
specific problems, rather than wading through tutorials & workbooks.

Hope to hear from you soon!

Janet

To get as far as creating the site in Dreamweaver, I presume you have
defined a local directory for your site. In the files panel, press the
right-most button (the one with the tooltip "Expand to show local and remote
sites").

The new screen will show the remote files on the left, and your local site
on the right. In the left column, highlight the top of the tree (or the top
directory of your html files, if you've mapped to a different level). Press
the 'Get' or 'Checkout' button (depending upon whether you want to just copy
the site or check it out; if you are working on your own, Get will suffice).

This will copy the entire remote site to your machine. Dreamweaver will
probably warn you that it is about to download the site, in case you did
this accidentally.

HTH,

Pete.

Thank you for your help Pete, I've now got the full site in my local folder in
front of me. However, now all the main pages of the site have a small padlock
next to each of them and they appear to be read only. Can you tell me why this
is? Most of them have .asp extensions. Should I have enabled something to let
me work with .asp?

Thanks again,

Janet

Sounds like you have check-in/check-out functionality set up. The padlock
will stop you editing files accidentally. To edit a file, highlight it and
press the Check-out button. You can now edit the file, and can upload or
check-in the file once you've completed the changes. You can check-out as
many files as you like.

The fact that the files are .asp isn't affecting or causing this, but
something to be aware of; you will need to set up an .asp web server as a
'testing server' to test your changes before making them live.

Regards,

Pete.
