Default Rollovers and CSS - 07-09-2004 , 04:07 PM

After years of building table formatted sites (with a bit of CSS) I'm
venturing into a CSS driven site, mainly driven by accessibility issues.

Regarding rollover images for menu options. Should I continue with
javascript or perform the rollover with CSS?

Do it with CSS.

Check these and tell me how you like them -

http://www.midwestespresso.com
http://www.therobertshouse.com/test/

No javascript.

It seems from these and other examples that CSS rollovers manipulate an
image.

Javascript based rollovers, in my previous work, swap the image for another
image where the change is more distinct - for example a bevel button being
depressed on rollover.

Are CSS driven rollovers equally at home with swapping images?

The links I sent you do not do an image swap. They simply reposition a
background image. The up state has the background image positioned to show
the 'up' state graphic. The over state repositions the background image so
that the 'over' state graphic is shown instead.

The question is - are you sure?

I notice that http://www.midwestespresso.com still has the rollover scripts
in the <head>. You've gotta learn to let go Murray :-)

On a more serious note, I'm going to stick with javascript for menus /
rollovers. I'm using the www.milonic.com scripts. I don't feel I can
change every technique simultaneously in the next project.

Thanks for that! I had missed that entirely. Those scripts are in the
process of being outed as we speak! 8)

I do not recommend the use of any all-javascript menu system. There are
just too many potential problems.

Well possibly, but I'm using Milonic on about 10 sites and I've had no
reported problems.
