Default Reliable Site Sucker? - 06-18-2009 , 06:48 PM

I'm looking for a reliable site download tool so I can manipulate portions
of that site for a client. This site is located at http://www.Georgia.org

I know it is chock-full of .aspx and the problems this causes, but I'm more
interested in everything except for the.aspx files. What is a reliable tool
for Dreamweaver CS 4?

Thanks!

Ross

That is a good question. Macromedia just seemed to abandon this
discussion room. It's now operated by Google groups and all of the
Guru's moved on. As for me, I came here to learn a couple months ago
and have not seen an organized group to this day. Good luck with the
Georgia Site, looks really good and professional.

Ross - do you have Linux available? There is a nice simple little
command that will quickly download more of a website than I have managed
with anything (free) on Windows. I guess it would work if you even
booted with one of the free "Live" CDs and download to a USB stick. If
you feel like that I'm happy to boot a Linux CD on a Windows box to try
it for you on one of my sites (so I can see if anything obvious is
missed)

Actually Macromedia was bought by Adobe a few years ago and Adobe
abandoned Usenet in favour of their web only Forums. :-(

However Google Groups did not take over this or the other old Macromedia
groups - they just float around the internet servers that mirrored the
old Adobe groups on their own and will do so or ever - even if Google
disappears. (Unless Adobe goes to a great deal of trouble to send cease
messages around the world - which seems unlikely. (I pick up the group
from the BT server I get the reset of my News from)

No, I try to avoid Linux in all of its flavors. I'm currently trying out a
program called Web Extractor which seems pretty interesting, but it's far
from perfect.

I may have to try out a Linux distribution after all. Sigh.

:-) I run Vista on my development box, XP on my internet man box, Linux
SUSE on the box that keeps the backups and runs the scanner and Mac
Leopard on a second test and development box. OK I'm not entirely sane.

But a live distro like Knoppix or Mint or any of the other live ones
runs straight from the Cd and doesn't touch your hard drive. The
Terminal line is a single one - wget -r "URL" or the other way around -
I'll have to look it up - and it deposits the site on the desktop in a
folder in seconds. Doesn't handle .asp but the only thing it missed the
last time I tried it was the "hover" state of some buttons produced with
FrontPage (!)

But good luck anyway and tell us how you get on with your Win efforts -

so I downloaded and cut a Knoppix DVD. It boots into some menu. Entirely in
German. I'm okay in English. German? Not a word.
What I want to do is download the entire Georgia.org site is stick that onto
my desktop, c:\users\greenber\desktop

How do I do that? In English, please. I did find the shell and typed "ls -l"
followed by a return/enter and it yelled at me. In German.

I really like HTTrack Website Copier which is available at http://httrack.com/
If you have a Live Linux distribution CD you can simply open a Terminal
window and type

wget -r http://www.......etc

and sit back.
