What effect does the hyphen have in the last line of the code below?

None - it's part of the filename.

Not what I was hoping for. But have a look at
http://devedge.netscape.com/viewsource/2002/img-table/
anyway.

By the way, I don't see the gap in any Macintosh browser. Nor do I see
why you should in any browser.

By the way, I never have problems like this if I put each graphic in its
own table cell.
