or even

Slick, svelte, template friendly, able to be managed by DW's link
management, able to be spidered by the SE spiders, and they work all day
long.

As I have said before - I think the whole idea of the FW menus is a BIG
mistake.

Sorry I missed that, 'cause I've been struggling with the popup menu
generator in FW. It's worked to a point, but my menu is appearing smack
dab
in the middle of the page, a long way from the "over" image. Is there any
way to set absolute coordinates for the menu? The only thing in FW's Popup
Menu Generator is a setting for coordinates relative to the over image,
and
that's set correctly.

I'd also prefer to use my own gifs or pngs for the menu items, but FW 4
wants html text to be entered on their own buttons - not my idea at all.
I'd
also like the image backgrounds to be translucent. I have a feeling that
all
this is a pretty tall order, and at this point I'd settle for an opaque
submenu in html text that pops up where I want it - adjacent to the right
side of the over image. (I looked at Valley Web Designs Popup Image
Motivator, but it's not ready for MX yet.)

Sorry to ask for a repeat, but if not FW, what IS the best way to create
popup menus?

Tom

I took Murray's advice and used the Simple Popup Menu from Project Seven.
Aside from one minor glitch it works very well. No transparency, of course,
but that wasn't really necessary.

The Young Pup method looked VERY cool, but it was beyond my capability at
this point. Someday...

Thanks!

Tom

Tom:

In many ways, the Youngpup menu is even simpler than the PVII ones. But you
would need to know what to put where, so to speak!

I'm glad to hear that you found these usable alternatives!

I'd like the backgrounds of my menu items to be semi-transparent, fogging
the image under them. The menu borders and text should be opaque, of course.
I'd be happy enough with semi-transparent html text blocks, but I'd prefer
semi-transparent gifs or pngs.

I tried both gifs and pngs. Gifs apparently don't do semitransparency, and
my pngs came out fully opaque. (It's possible - likely - that I didn't save
the PNGs properly in Fireworks. Any hints would be appreciated.)

Tom:

The *only* way you will get this will be to make a second version of the
images underlying the layers, and swap them in when the layers open. These
second versions should have the semi-transparent effect (a fade, I presume)
as part of the image that is being swapped in.

You are correct in that GIFs don't do semi- transparency, and PNG
transparency is badly supported.

Rob:

You should be able to adapt the youngpup menus to do submenus.

But just remember - they are *ALL* layers, both Youngpup and PVII.

Youngpup looks pretty cool. I was looking for something to do popups with
submenus, and it doesn't look like Youngpup will do that. I know I could
accomplish this with the P7 menus (using the AutoLayers), but it just seems
like everything would get so cluttered with so many different layers. Also,
I need something fairly easy to explain to other people who will serve as my
backup. I think I can explain FW menus fine, but they're so quirky. Any
thoughts?
