try statcounter.com

works great for me and provides loads of in depth stats for free

Session logs from your host have a much better reliability, and don't slow
your page loads down. Ask your host....

I use sitemeter successfully.

But getting it to ignore my own visits can be a problem sometimes.
It sets a cookie, but in this security conscious age - people clear
all the browser histories, cookies etc., so I have to visit the admin
manager pages to reset their cookie.

It can also ignore blocks of IP numbers, but being on a dynamic ISP
rather than static - this doesn't always work.

Do any hit counters have a more reliable method ?
