Hi, Murray -

I'm glad to know Netscape is "safe". (The warnings are out there on assorted
DW tutorial pages.)

I don't have anything to show yet, because I've gone back to square one and am
reading the chapters on layers in the Sams DWMX book. Right now I'm on the
behaviors chapter.

Last night before reading, I kept trying it exactly (supposedly) the way I
thought I was supposed to, but on mouseover the layer images would appear once
and be gone forever. I know it's ME that's missing something, and I won't give
up.

BTW - are you saying that DW is the way to go for this art-image site and NOT
the javascript I keep trying to figure out on the {{http://www.osei.noaa.gov/}}
site? I REALLY want to know how to do that anyway, maybe because I've tried so
hard and cannot quite get all the way to grasping it on my own. I'm referring
to the mousing over different links in the menu and getting new pictures in a
cell on the right..

Does anybody know a way to do this effect? After spending hours reading on
the basics of JS, I still cannot look at the code and just "do it." In the
meantime, the bottom line is I have been unproductive and have got to get
SOMEthing to work today!

"I'll be back" after some more practice on the layers and will supply my code
so that I can get help IF I am still stuck!!

Best regards,

Catherine

If they are, then those are deeply stupid mistakes by the authors. You
should not regard them as a resource for your studies. Perhaps you have
misinterpreted their comments?

Stick with it.

I'm just saying it's so easy to do in DW, that there is not a good reason to
go for anything else, UNLESS your requirements become a bit more
sophisticated.

Both Nadia and I have given you links for how to do it - what is it about
that method that you are not understanding?

Eureka! Got it - it's a beautiful, beautiful thing!!!

I got the page set up in layers, with the thumbnail mouseover showing a framed
layer with enlargement, and it all just works so beautifully!

It really is "EASY" when you know how! What I was missing from the example
above was the javascript:void(0) null link; I think that's why it wasn't
working right. I noticed Nadia had it in her code, but I didn't remember it's
purpose until re-reading the book.

This is great! The one thing I have to do is make sure the positioning is
absolute. I don't see a place to enter that in the property inspector for
layers. Although I do know I can set it in css (my new best friend) or
manually.

You guys are such a HUGE help! Once again, I love this forum! The assistance
you guys give is beyond measure - especially for someone like myself who has no
breathing body to go to for this kind of information.

Murray, I guess you would say just chuck the javascript method above in favor
of DW layers? (http://www.osei.noaa.gov/
)

Is there *any* instance I should know about where the it would be better than
the DW layers for this kind of layout? (I'd still like to know how to do it
"just becuz" I have spent so much time trying to solve it and don't like to
start something and abandon it.) And I have been reading, right or wrong, that
the javascript is such an efficient technique for the browsers. True?

Riding high on the sublime (but inevitably brief) wave of success after two
days of struggle,

Catherine

What I have been recommending that she do, and what I think is wonderful in
its simplicity is this page -

And Nadia's is here -

That would be an easy way to do it (the SetTextofLayer way), but there are
other excellent ways, too, like the ShowPic extension from PVII.

No. I can't think of any.

Efficient? Compared to what?

Murray, to clarify from your above question: "> (Catherine): Does anybody know
a way to do this effect? (Murray): Both Nadia and I have given you links for
how to do it - what is it about that method that you are not understanding?"
(Answer I was referring to using the particular javascript that I still want
to know how to do.

What I figured out above was just the show-hide. I don't know what the
difference is between the set text of layers and the show-hide.

*When is set-text better than plain show-hide?

SO - now that I've learned show-hide, I'm going to download your show-pic
extension and give that a shot.

[If anyone has an easy javascript to do what they did with the mouseovers in
the center placing images on the right in this site:
"http://www.osei.noaa.gov/" - please pass it on.]

(**How do you copy in some of the previous response when replying that puts
the << in there automatically? When I cut and paste the section, there are no
<<.)
