Follow-up:
I've checked the default colours I listed in my previous post, and they
match the default link colours in the following browsers:
IE 6
NS 4.08
NS 4.7
NS 6.2
NS 7.1
Mozilla 1.6
Mozilla 1.7
Mozilla Firefox 0.8
Mozilla Firefox 0.9.1
Opera 7.11
Opera 7.52
This being the case, I think you should be fine using #0000FF as your fake
link colour - to further ensure the matching of your fake link with the real
links, couldn't you just put the default colours in your body tag?
<body bgcolor="#FFFFFF" link="#0000FF" vlink="#FF0000" alink="#800080">

My IE Settings are showing a full-on blue as the default unvisited
hyperlink
colour: #0000FF. The purple visited hyperlink colour is #800080, and
default hover colour is full-on red: #FF0000.
