Seems to me that tables are not the way to go. Based on what i've read it seems
you can create the same layouts with CSS, and it would probably do it better.
I'm getting really frustarted cos tables seem to be unpredictable. I want to
create a template, whcih all other pages can use. At the moment i'm creating
various tables, all incased in one 800 pixel wide table. But trying to copy
content in causes the main table to resize. How do you go about creating a
template layout using CSS? - a template which could then be applied to every
page.

Then you haven't studied enough. And my observation is that if you are
having trouble with tables, you'll have trouble with CSS.

If that's true then you need to look at the content widths, and at your
table's basic structure.
