Thats the point. there are no pages in my templates directory other than other templates.

The only thing that I've been able to come up with is that this only seems to occur if I amend a template.

My thinking is (untested at the moment) that the problem seems to occur when I amend a template directly via the site manager and not via the library.

I'll give it a another go and see what happens.
