It used to be that DW had a much, much better memory of what your last
selection was, re: root v. document. MX now seems to get confused much more
often - I too find it to be a pain at times.

Other than taking the time to look at the link options (root/document) you
could apply the relativity extension as needed:
http://home.clara.net/locust-star/

I've never used it, but have heard good things about it.
