If you must use Perl then I suggest a great book by Paul DuBois called
"MySQL and Perl for the Web" published by New Riders (ISBN:0-7357-1054-6).

So would I but you mentioned PERL in your original post.

For a good book on PHP/MySQL I would recommend "PHP and MySQL Web
Development" by Welling and Thomson.
