Problem with image inside UL

I have a UL with a width of 200px width by 55px height. I have created a
background image for the UL with the same measurements. When I add the image as
a background image inside the UL the UL is about 40px wider than the image and
I have to resize the UL down to about 160px. - less than the image size.

Whats going on? There is nothing inside the UL at the moment apart from the
background image.

Have you set the margin and padding of the UL?
