Default Problem with FRAMES - 07-14-2004 , 09:18 AM

I have created a site, containing 2 frames (left & right). The left frame's
width is constant, the right's is relevant (frameset rows="*" cols="190,2*").
When I put a small quantity of text in the right frame everything is OK, but
when the quantity is bigger, there appears a scrolling both for width and
height. The table, which contains the text in the right frame, is sized so that
no width scrolling is neccessary, but it remains (the width scrolling). if I
switch scrolling NO - then both width and height scrollings disappear. i would
like to preserve the heigth scrolling and loose the width scrolling. Does
anybody know how can I do so ? Thanks in advance

The reason for using or not using frames should be based on a) your site's
needs, and b) your willingness to accept the potential problems that frames
can create for you as developer and maintainer of the site and for your
visitors as casual users of the site.

I am down on frames because I believe that they create many more problems
than they solve.
Judging from the posts here, and the kinds of problems that are described,
the kind of person most likely to elect to use frames is also the kind of
person most likely ill-prepared fo solve the ensuing problems when they
arise. If you feel a) that you understand the problems and b) that you are
prepared to handle them when they occur, and c) that you have a need to use
frames, then by all means use them.

As far as I know, the most comprehensive discussions of frames and their
potential problems can be found on these two links -

Im having the same problem as you are and i was messing around with my right
margin. I indented the right margin and the informationwas pushed in and it
took away my horizontal bar. I also had a table on my page with all my info in
the table and set the table width to 100 % and that also helped... Try that out
if it doesnt work i hope flash or someone else could help, but those are my
suggestions.

Thank you for your advice ! Unfortunately, I know no better way to do what I
need to do with my site. Although all those troubles really mak me doubt about
frames efficiency Anyway, I have to do it that way unless until I find a
better one. Thank you for replying me !

Thank you for your advice ! The fact that you have solved the same problem is
really a piece of relief. Could you please explain what do you meen by
"intending the right margin" - I've tried to move it leftwards and rightwards,
but it does not help My info also is put in a table, I've set the table's
width to 100%, but the horizontal scroll remains. Thank you anyway !

Why do you feel you need to use frames, then?

Murray: do you think that by putting all the information into a layer on that
frame, would make the horizontal scroll bar disappear? Isnt a layer fixed on
the page were as a table will float causing the horizontal scroll bar to appear?

Ina: I use DW and I selected the frame i wanted to change my margin width to.
I selested the right margin and indented it in 4 inches which caused all my
information to be pushed inwards. I dont really like this solution so im trying
another way but it worked for some of my pages but not all.

I need to use frames, because I need 2 stable (not moveable) menus - in the upper and in tle left part of the side, and the rest to be changeable

Thanks, again. I use DW too. When I move the right margin of the right frame another (third) frame appeares, which I hadn't placed. Did I get u wrong about intending the right margin?

That's not a good enough reason to accept all the downsides to frames,
frankly.

Most professional sites (all?) that use such architecture do not use frames.

Bite the bullet, and go with flat pages that link to each other.

I dont know why another frame would just appear. On my site i have a header
frame(top)( which is fine in positioning) navigational frame(left), footer
frame (bottom)(which is fine too) , and then my right frame which is my body..
My problem was the info in the body frame was going out farther than the header
and footer frames so i indented all the info on each of my body pages which
brought everything in more and got rid of my horizontal scroll bar but gave me
a vertical scroll bar... I dont know why another frame would just appear if you
didnt set the frame up there, unless i understand you wrong.
