Default printing web images - 11-26-2004 , 02:09 AM

what I want to do is have a screen version of an image on a web page, with a
print option that allows the user to print a higher res version. If this cant
be done how would I go about giving the user the option to download a pdf,
thanks in advance lisa

Huh?
"Screen version"? "Print higher res version"? What has the pdf to do
with this?
Can you please rephrase all that and make it clearer?

to clarify: I have a text and vector image saved as a jpg, this jpg is on a
web page, I want the user to be able to print this as an A4 document with print
quality vector work as you would print from illustrator or acrobat. So I'm
wanting to know how to create this web page with one jpg image and a print
button which somehow sends a pdf file to print?? I am a beginner so if theres
another way to do something like this let me know.

Ok, the simplest solution is usually the best:

Create a pdf with whatever you want in it, be it the high res image with
text or whatever. Put it in your site. Make a regular link to it, or zip
it and create a link to the zip.

If you have it "as is" (not zipped), it might open in some users
browsers. Therefore, it's usually a good advice to write something
beside the link like "to download, right-click and save to your computer
(PC) or Ctrl + click and save (Mac)" and also state how large the file
is and how long time it'll take on e.g. a 56Kb modem and cable. Use the
calculator here:
http://www.t1shopper.com/tools/calculate/downloadcalculator.shtml

From then on, the user can print as he/she wishes. No need for any
print buttons since you can't make it work cross browser anyway. If the
pdf opens in the browser, the browser has a "print" button already. If
the user downloads and open the pdf with e.g. Acrobat, the app has a
print option. So why re-invent the wheel?

If you have it zipped, it'll download automatically in 99.99999999% of
all computers.

Try something like this

The images referred to by the above link may be full sized, but it will not
print high res.

The image of the two dogs on the beach, brought into Photoshop reveals that
it will print 11.1 x 8.3 inches @ 72 ppi. right from the browser. To bring
this image to a reasonably high res (180 ppi), the image needs to be resized
(and not resampled). The printed image will then shrink to 4.4 x 3.3 inches.
