Default pop up layers - 07-19-2004 , 10:31 PM

Im sure this has been discussed already, but Id like to make a pop up layer
appear when a viewer scrolls over certain text. Im assuming this can be done
in CSS Behaviors. Im struggling through it, so if anyone has some advice or
could point me in the right direction Id appreciate it. Is this a decent thing
to do, or is it frowned upon?

Thanks

What are you trying to do exactly? Is it text popping up or a graphic? Is it
like mousing over a thumbnail and having a large image appear?

I ask because there are a number of ways to do things like this, from the
swap/hide layers behavior to swap images to Set Text of Layer to.....well,
you get the idea.

Id like to make a pop up layer appear when a viewer scrolls over certain text.

What are you trying to do with this. This can be used for several different
things and the way you deal with, for example, popup menus, is different than
how you deal with, what is commonly referred to as, disjointed rollovers.

OK Ive read some on disjointed rollovers....Sounds like I have to turn one
image into another image. So ive got to have an image already in place, and
instead of a pop up "layer" or text box or something, and image would appear.
I guess I could make an image of a text box complete with text....but to roll
it over with another image...could I just put a transparent image where I want
the box to pop up and roll over or swap with that?

Id would like to have a "text box" or something of the sort (I was thinking of
an invisable layer that became visable) pop up or appear when a viewr scrolled
over a piece of text. Or a text "null" link.

AHO, two main choices
image
layer

image
you'll need at least three
1. the mouseOver image (apply the Swap image behaviour here. 2. the
invisible image (transparent spacer.gif, name it in the properties panel
3. the target image
You'll find that consistent sizes are a major bonus

layer
1. set a layer's properties to invisible, name it! 2. mouseOver &
mouseOff text or picture, apply a show layer behaviour

You might want to download some free extensions for this as they can aid
with multiple/group layers and layer positioning

what kind of extensions would they be? Not sure what they would call them. Most importantly, where can I get them? Thanks!

If it's text you're primarily interested in, I'd think creating layers for
the "pop-ups" that are hidden and "show" when you mouseover is the way to
go. Read the DW HELP about the show/hide layers behavior. Also check out the
Project Seven site (http://www.projectseven.com/extensions/index.htm) for
extensions that help you with layers as well as some good tutorials. If
you're using layers, their SnapLayer extension is probably a must.

You could also look into the DW "Set Text As Layer" behavior if you're just
doing text. It's not the most elegant thing going but might do the trick.

If you're mostly working with graphics for this, swap layers (also in the DW
behaviors) could be the ticket.

AHO
Some advice:
Just remember though, you are using a table layout. DO NOT insert a layer
into your table, without knowing the consequences. Make sure you check your
design in various browsers, otherwise you may be in for a bit of a shock
:-)
Also, resize your browser to make sure that the layers are where they are
supposed to be.
