PNG uses them as its native format NOT as the web format, when you export
for the web, use a GIF / JPEG, actually with support for PNG's improving,
you can get away with it but NOT the one that Fireworks saves for its own
use as it is NOT optimised...

PNG should have been the standard by now, but a lack of support means that
experienced web developers shy away from them...

You don't save images out of FW for web use, you export them. Why FW decided
to use the PNG file extension is beyond me, but the PNG that FW saves is a
proprietary FW-PNG.

You *can* export PNGS from FW, and those will work fine. What doesn't work
so well is transparency support. IE/PC is awful at it. There are some
javascript workarounds, but it's still a PITA to get transparent PNGs to
work in IE. So, it's still not a widespread file format for web graphics.

darrel:

They decided to use PNG (probably) because a) they didn't want to use PSD,
and b) they didn't want to create a proprietary format, and c) PNG was
already robust enough to support the feature set they wanted to use. But
I'm guessing....

I imagine they had more plans for the FW PNG format initially, but never got
to really implement them in their other apps. It is confusing to new users,
though.

Yes - the whole save as vs export is confusing the first time through....

so let me get this right if i creat say a banner for the top of my webpage, and this is created in fireworks, when i save it,it will be saved as a png file, but to use this in a webpage i need to optimize this to a gif and then export it to dreamweaver, if this is the case where does it get saved?

thanks

This is correct - use either GIF or JPG, whichever is more appropriate for
the type of graphic in the banner. It will be put whereever you tell FW to
put it in the export dialog.

A 'Fireworks PNG' file.

You need to export it as either a GIF, JPG, or PNG, depending on your needs.

In the folder that contains your web site files.

Extremely confusing for those like me who started with FrontPage, used Image
Composer, then found that in IC, you could open any image, do a File, Save
As, to any other image type. So when I first opened up Photoshop, and I
couldn't do that, I had a hard time figuring out what to do. PS also uses
the word Export, not the most intuitive way to do things.
