Default Page width size help? - 11-04-2004 , 03:28 PM

Hi, Thanks for any help I made a big mistake =( I made a site and from
what I was seeing it looked fine. But then the person I made it for said there
is white to the right. In other words I never stop to think different people
use different resolutions on their computers. I dont even know where to begin
to fix this mess as the heading, navigation etc is all sized to fit this page
in tables. My question is what size width do you go by when making a site to
make sure this doesn't happen? From what I was seeing when making it had I
put buttons ect any further to the right they would not have been seen right.
Help Me =( Its about a 40 page site I made and I need to fix this before
Saturday. =( =( Jill

Not only that, but people have their browsers open to different sizes. It's
the size of the browser viewport you need to be concerned with.

100%

BTW, it sounds like the page is too narrow for your client. That's fine.
It's better to be too narrow than too wide. Just take the site and give it a
background and center it. Point out to your client that not everyone browser
the internet with a high res monitor with their browser maximized so that
it's important the actual content of the site stays rather narrow.

Hi Darrel, Thanks for your reply. Im not certain what you mean when you say
make sure the size is 100%? How do set this setting for the page? All I see
when I go to edit page size are standard monitor sizes and even if I click on
these when I go back to view my page its saying 786. Is there anyway while
making the page when you view it that you will see it in at least a 800 width?
Thanks again, Jill

It's not a page setting. It's the width of your layout objects on the
page...be it tables or divs or spans or what have you.

You can't edit the size of the HTML page...all that setting does is change
the size of DW. The size of an HTML page is the same as the web browser view
port size. That could be 300 pixels in width or 3000.

How about showing me a link to the page?

800 pixels in width is quite wide...it'd be too wide for my web browser
(which I tend to keep around 700 pixels in width). If you can, it's best to
design in percentage widths. Here's a recent site we did that way:

http://www.courts.state.mn.us

open the page and resize your web browser, you will see that it fits to the
size of the web browser.

Hi Darrel, Nice site I like the boarder look around it. Here is the link to
the site that I have been talking about. Any thoughts on what I can do to fix
this mess would be greatly appreciated. http://advancedbsys.com/index

I wouldn't call it a mess, exactly. Like I said, being too narrow is not
really big problem.

Having your navigation on the right is a bit of a problem...since if a
person does have a narrower window, the navigation will get cut off.

I'd probably just center all your tables on the page.

Otherwise, look at your tables, they are all set to '780' in width. Try
setting them to '100%' instead.

Hi Darrel, Thanks again for your help after viewing many sites with a
different resolution I see what I did wrong and what has to be done to fix this
but wanted to ask one more question and that would be to have a heading that
goes across the top of the page how big should you or could you make this so
that the least amount of another background has to show? Just asking as the
heading I have on my site isn't going to look very good with another color
around it.. Jill

It's a visual design issue. When you design a site, you can't design in
photoshop. You need to think unlike a print designer...as your canvas is
infinite in size.

So, basically, get creative. ;o)

Work with fade-outs, blends, repeating patterns, etc.

Here's a site that I built a while back with a 'stretchy' header image:

Hi Darrel, I wanted to stop back and thank for all your help. I checked out
your herdpro.com site and I like the work you do very nice.. I now have more
of an understanding 'thanks to you' of what direction I need to be going in
with dreamweaver and although I have some work ahead of me to fix my clients
site im sure glad you took the time to explain this all to me so I didn't make
the same mistakes in the future. Sadly once im done fixing his site I have to
fix my own which is just as big so im going to be busy but who knows maybe it
will turn out to be fun. Thanks again, Jill

You are certainly welcome. There's a infinite world of learning when it
comes to web design. That's part of the fun and part of the frustration. ;o)
