Default Page Sizing - 11-07-2005 , 04:27 AM

Hi MM Team,

I know I should know this already but I am drawing a mental blank. I want to
build a webpage so that everything fits nicely onto a 15 inch screen, and also
a 21inch screen. When my page fits onto a 15inch screen, there are huge blank
areas on the side of the 21inch screen. Is there a way to set the page so that
it auto sizes or something like that?

Thanks

Ray

Inches have nothing to do with your web site. I can set my 21 inch screen to
600 pixels and my 15 inch screen to 1280 if I wanted to.

Furthermore, screen resolution doesn't have much to do with your site
either, as it's the browser viewport size you need to be concerned about.

As for auto-sizing, what you want to do is accomodate a wide range of
browser viewport sizes. To do that, use flexible width layotus...using
percentages instead of fixed widths.

You may also want to add some min/max-width attributes to keep line lengths
manageable.

Just to give you an idea of real estate you have, the general Rule of thumb for
CRT monitor resolutions in the 4:3 ratio are:

14" - 640x480
15" - 800x600
17" - 1024x768
19" - 1280x1024
21" - 1600x1200

LCD panels are similar except thry are treated like the next size up CRT (so
15" LCD = 17" CRT). LCDs 19" and above seem to be stuck though doing resultions
lower than they should. I haven't seen a 19" LCD that does 1600x1200 in stores
yet.

Widescreen LCDs have a 16:9 ratio.

Those are rather arbitrary and, besides, screen resolution isn't the issue.
