Default Overlapping on page - 07-16-2004 , 03:52 PM

Hi folks- I've been getting intermittent reports that there is an
'overlapping' problem on this page:

http://www.capfit.com/

That's the only description I've gotten so I can't go into any more detail,
but if you could take a look and report to me what you think might be
happening, I'd greatly appreciate it.

It looks fine on all four computer monitors I have at various resolutions,
so I can't seem to figure out what they might be talking about...

Thanks VERY much again,

David

Hi David,
The only thing I can see is that the page is too wide and viewers have to
use the horizontal scrollbar.

David.

If you go to your cardio page, I see a giant flash file that covers up the
right column of images/text. It appears you have tried to position your
flash file as a layer on TOP of your content using WMODE to make it
transparent. Well, as you are finding out, this doesn't work in all
browsers. In my case, it isn't working in FireFox. It won't work in any of
the older browsers (AFAIK)

It seems to work ok in IE/PC and Safari/Mac...however, your links in your
flash file don't seem to work in Safari at all...yet another problem.

I'd suggest you just get rid of all the flash. I see no reason to use flash
for a basic column/navigation layout like you have. It's overkill and, as
you are finding out, is causing some accessibility issues.

All you really need to do to see it is enlarge the text size. Of course
anyone without the Flash player will see nothing.

Home page fails if I increase the text size twice in Firefox. Very same
problem with Cardio page.

No...that's not the issue...it's that there's a flash file on TOP of the
text layer and some browsers can't handle the WMODE transparency.

I tried it first in Firefox. All I saw was a huge Flash icon telling me I
needed to go download a program to see the site. Then I tried it in IE6 with
the Flash player. I didn't try any of the links. I had no interest in going
deeper into the site. However, I did try increasing the text size in the
browser. Because of the four absolutely position <div>'s, the text from the
higher <div>'s overlapped the lower <div>'s.

That said, I agree with you that this is a flawed approach. To adjust your
browser list slightly, it works on the Mac if you have OS/10. It won't work
in OS9 machines or older. It won't work in any version of Opera on any
platform and it won't work in NN4 or older. I'm not sure where the cutoff
would be on IE/PC, but my guess would be that it's probably supported in 5
and 6, but probably not in 4 or older.

Hi Gary- sorry I couldn't entice you deeper into the site... sounds like you
were less than impressed. Alas, I'm not a designer by trade (could you
tell?)... but thank you both for the input- it does help a great deal!

Hey everyone- I finally got an image of what the problem *looks* like, (
http://www.detailz.com/copy.jpg) but still can't tell with my limited
knowledge what's causing it. The computer this image is from was running
Win98 with IE6 at 1024x768. When I call it up on a similar computer (my
laptop, same resolution, broswer, better OS and speed) it looks okay. Any
ideas?

Thanks...

David

Hi all- okay, thanks to some of the helpful people here, I know that the
site has some inherent problems, but I now know what's causing the overlap-
it's the Broser font size setting. If I take my View/Text size and change it
to "Larger", I get the effect that people were seeing. Now, what I still
don't know is how to guard against this... as always, help appreciated
greatly.

Thanks,

David
