Other NNTP groups?

A few are posted above .. unfortunately there are not a whole lot of
NNTP groups anymore.

Maybe not on private or company servers, but the real Usenet still
exists. On a good server like http://news.individual.net/ you have
access to ten thousands of (non-binary) groups.

What is making NNTP or Usenet unavailable or unknown to people is two
things-

Major ISPs simply not offering an NNTP gateway. I connect using Time-Warner.
I can use NNTP to connect to named NNTP servers but Time-Warner has dropped
offering a Usenet mirroring server. Probably for reasons of a small
percentage of the users of that service flooding bandwidth, most of the
(*&^&^^*(())( what the heck is that picture complaints, and that the other
99% of their customers have no idea what was turned off--

So since my ISP won't provide direct mirror access to Usenet, If I wanted to
view them I would have to use a pay or free portal.

True, but at least you have a choice. There are hundreds of servers
available. Some free, some not. Some good, some bad.

Personally I use the aforementioned server for most of my newsgroup
stuff (besides this one and some private groups), simply because it's
reliable and very well maintained. It's not free, but almost: 10 EUR a
year is not much and really worth it.

Yea, I'm on TW's RoadRunner. I tried a paid service shortly after they
outsourced to a crumby 3rd party provider. Then I went to the free
text-only aioe, but they started suffering down time.

Now I'm using the free (registered), text-only Motzarella and am quite
happy with it. Only been with them for a year or so, but so far so
good.
