It's interesting. I did the same thing. Then I set it back and forth a few
times. Finally I left it on for two days and love it. (I use a laptop) When
I see a monitor that doesn't use it now it feels like I'm back using my
Heath-Zenith H89 and DOS again.....all I see are the pixels of the letters.

It's true it isn't as crisp, but it's more like reading real type and less
like pixelated computer fonts.

I'm pretty sure that font smoothing is on by default in XP. There are
two stages -

1. Basic Font smooting, which works like OSX. That is, headings will
be smoothed, but not smaller body text. This is good on LCDs
2. Clear Type. I turned that off immediately. It looks horrid on my
LCD monitor - makes everything very smooth at the expense of
crispness.

You need a patch for the emulator.

Okay, please ignore me. It's early, I haven't finished my coffee,
and I didn't notice you were using a Mac with an emulator.

Doh!

(But anyone with Win XP who isn't using ClearType should be!)

Does windows XP have an option for font smoothing?

The reason I ask is that I'm viewing <h2> <h3> tags in PC
IE6/NN7/FireFox and Opera6 and they look a bit rough around the
edges to say the least.

In Mac browsers, OSX, they look pretty smooth.

Cheers

Yes. To each his own.

I run XP using Virtual PC on my Macintosh. I wish I could apply OS X's
font smoothing to my XP windows instead of using ClearType.

Hummm...so should I be using 'cleartype' instead of 'standard'?

Nothing was on in my XP by default but then again I'm using an emulator
so maybe that's a bit different.

Yup, once I turned 'basic' on the the headings were improved but not as
good as on OSX. Does that sound about right?

This is good on LCDs

Not tried that yet.

Depends on your monitor, I guess. They should be roughly the same.

If you have a CRT you may like clear type. However, I don't so I can't
tell you.

Gah. ClearType on my CRT makes me think my eyes are slightly crossed.
The text is WAY too blurry!

And this is a 22" monitor running at 1280x1024.

According to the text that accompanies the ClearType choice, it's
recommended for laptops (and therefore LCDs, perhaps), not CRTs.

It really looks awful on my LCDs, too. Perhaps it's meant for young eyes
only.
