Default **OT: Processor Clock Speed - 07-13-2003 , 06:15 AM

Hi! I posted a few days ago about my P4 laptop making ridiculous amount of noise and the fan continuously running! I went to the HP website today to submit an irrelevant request and noticed that it sent some specs along to the support group. As I browsed I noticed that there was a column that said MAX CLOCK SPEED 2000, CURRENT CLOCK SPEED 2400, uder the processor section. If thats the case, does that mean my computer is running faster than it should?

Is it possible to SLOW down and make my processor run slower than it is actually supposed to?

Thanks!

Can't speak to your actual clock speed, but many laptops will ramp up/down
the processor to conserve battery life. Full speed when full-o-juice and
slower when the tank is getting empty. Many also will slow down the clock
during idle time.

But I'm saying, I know people can tweak their system to run at higher speeds, is there a way to slow mine down to reduce power AND heat so my fan doesn't always have to cool it

Hmmm,

Now I dont mean to ask a silly question, But what on earth does your
processor speed have to do with Dreamweaver? You better hide. There are
eXtremists in these here parts that'll be none to pleased if they see such
an offtopic post.

Just so you dont get in anymore trouble, what you want to do is get into
your bios settings by pressing delete when the sytem starts up, and then you
need to change the speed of your bus multiplier, this limits the speed of
that the chip will do.

It depends entirely on your mobo and your chipset. Where did you get this
laptop?

The settings to 'slow down' your chipset reside in the system BIOS.
Accessible when you start or restart the machine by (usually) pressing the
delete key during startup. Watch your startup routine, you will usually see
a message similar to : "Press Del to enter Setup.". This message will tell
you which key gets you into the BIOS if Delete does not work. Inside the
BIOS there may or may not be multiplier settings for your chipset. If they
are there and can be altered, you have just found the means to slow down
your chipset.

As previously posted, however, many laptops automatically ramp the chipset
up or down depending on pre-determined criteria. It would be a good idea to
first check with the vendor you purchased the machine from and/or the
manufacturer.
